Social Sciences Dean's Ambassadors Council: The Ambassador's Council promotes and enriches the school by supporting new and existing school-wide/department projects. It collectively acts as an official student voice in discussing and program development with administrators and department chairs/faculty.
Global Connect: Global Connect is an educational partnership program that seeks to address short-comings in grades 8-12 international studies education through its high school curriculum program. Each year, UCI faculty, graduate and undergraduate students develop global issue-focused lesson plans covering topics such as terrorism, gross domestic product, and AIDS in Africa. The material is then taught by UCI affiliates alongside high school teachers in Newport Mesa and Saddleback School District high schools. Global Connect is the first UCI outreach program to become an established academic course for California’s schools.
Law Forum: The UCI Law Forum is an intellectual and practical exploration of modern law through a mix of specialized undergraduate courses; a series of lectures by practicing attorneys and distinguished UCI faculty; and hands-on legal research, advocacy, internships and community projects. The UCI Law Forum Journal is a publication dedicated to campus-wide legal scholarship by UCI undergraduate students. Designed to encourage undergraduates to engage in research that will enhance the legal knowledge and develop critical writing and editorial skills, the Journal is edited and administered by a selected staff of Law Forum student members.
Middle East Studies Student Initiative (MESSI): In Spring 2005, a board of students established the Middle East Studies Student Initiative (MESSI) in order to develop an inter-disciplinary Middle East Studies Program at the University of California, Irvine (UCI). This board created a forum where students could engage in academic dialogue related to cultural, social and religious issues within the region. The primary goal of this initiative is to educate our future global leaders dedicated to cross-cultural understanding.
Mock Trial: The UCI Mock Trial Program (UCIMT) trains students to participate in intercollegiate mock trial competitions governed by the American Mock Trial Association. Participants are expected to understand the mechanics of a trial and learn substantive law. Currently 100 students try out for the “squad” of two teams of eight and two alternates. In its fourth year, the team has positioned itself as a regional and national force, receiving 8th place in the nation.
Model United Nations: Model United Nations (MUN) is an organization that explores the fundamentals of the United Nations from both an oral and written perspective to better understand the global society and foster international awareness. Opportunities are given for students to learn debate, moderate, and teach in a variety of different ways.
Olive Tree Initiative (OTI): The Olive Tree Initiative is a diverse group of students who travel to the Middle East to hear perspectives from Israeli and Palestinian academics, community leaders, and other figures with first-hand knowledge of the conflict. Through their journey, the students seek to gain an understanding of the issues beyond the stories found in media and to share their findings with the community upon their return.
Summer Academic Enrichment Program (SAEP) The Summer Academic Enrichment Program (SAEP) is an intensive, five-week on-campus residential program designed to enhance the academic experience of first generation university students. Three courses in research methods, statistical analysis, and writing and communications are taught by UC Irvine faculty.
