Academic Program Awards & Scholarships
Social Sciences Alumni Academic Excellence Scholarship
This scholarship recognizes students for outstanding academic performance and service to the School of Social Sciences, UCI campus and community. Minimum GPA requirement is 3.5 for this scholarship. Selection criteria include academic performance, research activity, honors recognitions, and leadership/service to the campus and community. A two-page single-spaced personal statement that addresses these achievements is required, in addition to an unofficial transcript and a resume/CV.
Social Sciences Outstanding Honors Thesis Award
This award recognizes a student for their outstanding undergraduate honors thesis. Selection criteria include originality of research and demonstrated knowledge in the field of research. Submission of a draft thesis is permissible. A prize-winning thesis is well-written, well-organized, properly documented and theoretically sound.
Charles Lave Paper Prize
Named in honor of Charles Lave, an economics professor who served on the UCI faculty for more than 30 years who valued creative thinking, clear writing, and innovative uses of empirical data. He helped shape social science modeling through his teaching and through his classic book, An Introduction to Models in the Social Sciences (written with James March). The prize will be awarded to papers that display clear exposition of creative models (theories) and point to, or include, data that permit evaluation of the models. Any UCI undergraduate or graduate student is eligible for the prize. The paper may be in any social or behavioral science discipline, or interdisciplinary in nature. It may be qualitative (with words only) or quantitative (with mathematical expressions) and may range from a scholarly article (including papers done as class assignments or dissertation chapters) to an op-ed piece. In keeping with Charles Lave's values, clear and concise writing will be appreciated.
Alice B. Macy Outstanding Undergraduate Paper Award
This award recognizes a student for a paper that demonstrates original research. Submissions can be course papers or research papers, including those sponsored by the Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP). Honors theses will not be accepted for this paper competition. Only work completed since spring 2011 is eligible. Papers cannot be co-authored with other students or faculty.
David and Kristin Rosten International & Community Service Scholarship
This scholarship is awarded to students who are planning a career in international affairs and/or public/community service. The applicants are required to write a 2 page personal essay on how the scholarship would be used to support an international or domestic service experience. Scholarship funds are to be used for the purpose of student research, service and international travel related to education and humanitarian service. Only students graduating in June 2013 or beyond are eligible.
Boukai Family Foundation Scholarship
This scholarship program was established to encourage current students to build upon the values of family, faith, education and giving back to the community; to advocate the importance of tolerance toward Islam; and serve to strengthen opportunities for future generations in Arab-American communities. To be eligible, applicants must be a full-time Undergraduate student during the 2011-12 academic year; majoring in engineering, pre-med, nursing science, public health and/or medical anthropology; have demonstrated an interest in the Middle East and Muslim community; a minimum 3.0 GPA; be U.S. Citizen. This is a merit-based scholarship but financial need may be considered. Applicants
must also provide two faculty members names for reference.
Elena B. and William R. Schonfeld Scholarship
The Elena B. and William R. Schonfeld Scholarship is awarded annually in the School of Social Sciences to the outstanding undergraduate in the next to graduating class who combines excellence in scholarship with dedication to the university community and the highest level of achievement in other fields.
Dean's Endowed Fellowship for Excellence
The fellowship, established by retired Northrop Grumman Vice-Chairman, President and COO and Social Science alumni, Frank Lynch is awarded each year to a graduate student who exemplifies academic excellence.
Justine Lambert Paper Prize
The Justine Lambert Graduate Prize in the Foundations of Science, established by a generous bequest from the sons and friends of Justine Lambert, is awarded every other year to the best submitted graduate paper dealing with the foundations of the formal, natural or social sciences. The winning paper will focus on the foundational issues arising in one or more of the special sciences, using tools, methods and results from scientific practice to cast light on the conceptual, philosophical, and scientific relevance of those issues. The competition is open to all graduate students at the University of California, Irvine regardless of department or school affiliation. Please direct inquiries to lps@uci.edu.

End-of-year Graduate Order of Merit awards are made annually in each of four categories (Kathy Alberti Prize, Outstanding Scholarship, Outstanding Service, and A. Kimball Romney Award for Outstanding Graduate Student Paper), through a school-wide competition announced in the latter half of April. The awards recognize outstanding academic achievement and promise, scholarship, research and service. Each award carries a $500 honorarium and recognition during the School's formal Order of Merit ceremony held during commencement weekend in June.
Order of Merit: Kathy Alberti Prize
This award recognizes a graduate student who holds truly outstanding promise as a future professor or teacher. The student selected will epitomize a broad range of talents. Evidence of excellence may include scholarship, teaching, student mentoring, web site development, or any other relevant areas of contribution as defined by the nominator.

Order of Merit: A. Kimball Romney Award for Outstanding Graduate Paper
This award recognizes an outstanding graduate paper in the School of Social Sciences(open to Social Sciences graduate students only). Contest submissions may be course papers or other research papers prepared during the 2009-10 academic year. Work completed since summer 2009 through spring 2010 is eligible. Papers should represent the student's own original research; they cannot be co-authored with fellow students or faculty. Past prize-winning papers were exceptionally well-written, well-organized, properly documented and theoretically and conceptually sound. The writer must demonstrate knowledge of the current, relevant literature in the field of the research.

Outstanding Community College Transfer Student Scholarship
This scholarship recognizes outstanding transfer students. Eligibility for the Outstanding Transfer Student Scholarship is limited to community college transfer students. The student must have completed a minimum of two quarters at UCI as a Social Science major. Minimum GPA requirement is 3.0 for this scholarship. The scholarship supports research, travel and related educational expenses during summer 2012. Applicants are to submit a personal statement that will describe how the scholarship funds will be used in pursuit of their educational goals.
Steven Borowski Scholarship
Established in 2006 in the School of Social Sciences through a generous gift from Steven Borowski, a '79 economics graduate and co-founder of Metropolitan West Capital Management, LLC, the scholarship in his name will be awarded through 2011 to an exemplary School of Social Sciences student athlete. This award is administered by Athletics.
Gary J. Singer Endowed Scholarship
This scholarship is awarded to a student athlete who has outstanding academic achievements as well as contributions to their sport. This award is administered by Athletics.
Ruth Fulton Benedict Paper Prize
The Ruth Fulton Benedict Prize will recognize outstanding writing in anthropology. All undergraduates are eligible. Students may submit only one paper for consideration for this prize. The prize will recognize the author of an outstanding paper written for an anthropology class taken at UC Irvine. Papers from any anthropology class at UC Irvine may be submitted. Papers should be between 10 and 30 pages in length. Honor's theses may not be submitted. The paper need not report on original research, but must demonstrate analytical acuity, creativity, and dexterity with the conventions of anthropological writing. The winning paper will be posted and archived on the Departmental website, and the recipient of the prize will receive an award at the Department's Spring awards ceremony. Malinowski Prize for Undergraduate Research
The Malinowski Prize recognizes outstanding original research. Anthropology majors who conduct original research as part of regular coursework, an honor's thesis, UROP, SURP, EAP, or other such programs are eligible. Original research is defined as involving independent data collection based on any combination of the following methods: fieldwork, participant observation, interviews, surveys, documentary research, collection of images or texts from popular culture, and/or formal data collection and analysis. Papers written in collaboration with faculty members may not be submitted. Students may submit only one paper for consideration for this prize. Papers should be between 20 and 40 pages in length. Honor's theses may be submitted, but if they exceed the page limit must be shortened to adhere to the length requirement. The winning research paper will be posted and archived on the Departmental website, and the recipient of the prize will receive an award at the Department's Spring awards ceremony. Funded by a generous gift to the University from donors Reza Zariff and Rufina Paniego, this award will recognize an outstanding junior (or third year) anthropology major of great academic promise. The award comes with a cash prize of $1,000 and a certificate. The winner of the award will be expected to attend a luncheon with the donors in November and to provide updates on your progress.
Dr. Dard Magnus Rossell Memorial Award for Merit for Graduate Research in Anthropology
Supported by an anonymous donor, this award recognizes UCI Anthropology graduate students who are either non-traditional students and/or parents. Two $500 awards will be granted annually and will be announced in the spring quarter
The Jeff Garcilazo Fellowship/Scholarship Fund provides opportunities for students to examine the historical and contemporary experiences Chicano/Latino communities. The prize, made possible through support from the family of Professor Garcilazo and other donors to the Jeff Garcilazo Scholarship Fund, is awarded annually to undergraduate student author(s) of the best research paper(s) in Chicano/Latino studies. Students must be eligible for UCI cash awards and be enrolled at UCI in the Spring 2012 quarter in order to receive the cash prizes.
This award has been named and established in honor of the trailblazing Chicana historian, Vicki L. Ruiz. Ruiz is a professor of history and Chicano/Latino studies, and joined the UCI faculty in 2001. She has served as chair of the history department, director of K-12 outreach programs Humanities Out There and the UCI History Project, and most recently, as dean of the School of Humanities at UCI. Chicano-Latino Studies faculty are invited to nominate graduating undergraduate students who have achieved scholarly excellence and service in the face of much hardship for this award. The vision and dedication driving this student’s accomplishments and resilience are meant to honor and continue the extraordinary legacy and strides of Vicki L. Ruiz.
Jean-Claude Falmagne Research Award
The Jean-Claude Falmagne Research Award is a $3,000 research fellowship awarded to a cognitive sciences graduate student who has advanced to candidacy for the Ph.D. The award is to support the student's summer research activity. The John I. Sanli Pastore & Hill, Inc. Excellence in Economics Writing Award (undergraduate) and Internship(undergraduate and/or graduate)
The Sanli Pastore & Hill, Inc. Excellence in Economics Writing Award will be awarded to economics department undergraduates. The emphasis of the prize is excellence in writing skills.
The Summer Internship Award will be selected by the Institute for Mathematical and Behavioral Sciences (IMBS). Undergraduates and graduate students are eligible for this $3000 internship award. Interested parties should contact IMBS.
George R. and Cathleen Hill Undergraduate Award for Excellence in Economics
This is a scholarship is available to a full-time junior or senior majoring in economics. Applicants must have a G.P.A. of at least 3.5; submission of unofficial transcript printed by the registrar’s office along with this application is required. Applicants must complete application, attach a one-page personal statement discussing his/her educational accomplishments and future goals, and how this scholarship will assist in reaching those goals. Award recipients, once chosen, will be required to prepare and deliver a thank-you note to the scholarship donor and must attend a luncheon with the donor in order to receive payment of award.

Sheen T. Kassouf Endowed Fellowship
The Sheen T. Kassouf Endowed Fellowship was established in 2006 in the department of economics with a generous gift from Ned and Joyce Kassouf of The Kassouf Foundation. Honoring the legacy of Professor Sheen Kassouf, a pioneer of modern finance and a highly respected economics scholar and academician, the fellowship will be awarded each year to an economics graduate student who has demonstrated excellence in coursework and research.
Harry Eckstein Award for Outstanding Honors Thesis
This annual award recognizes the top political science honors thesis. Honors thesis faculty advisors nominate student theses in late May, winners are announced the last Friday of the quarter.
Jack and Suzanne Peltason Scholarship
Awarded throughout the year (usually for research) to political science majors, these merit-based scholarships help undergraduate students enhance their educational careers at UCI.
Pi Omicron Chapter Founders' Award for Outstanding Senior
This award is given annually to the Pi Omicron member who has best merged the goals of academic excellence and a commitment to public service during their undergraduate career. The recipient must be a graduating senior.
James N. Danziger Award for Teaching Excellence
Established in 2009, this award recognizes a political science graduate student advanced to candidacy for teaching excellence.
David Easton Award
This award is given annually for the best qualifying paper written during the preceding year by a political science graduate student.
Harry Eckstein Scholar Award
This award is given annually to the top political science graduate student advanced to Ph.D. candidacy the preceding year.
Carole Creek Bailey School of Social Sciences Undergraduate Award for Excellence in Sociology
This is award recognizes undergraduate students who demonstrate academic excellence and promise as community leaders. Must be a returning full-time student for the upcoming academic year; 3.5 GPA; declared major in sociology; completed application package including a personal statement and current unofficial transcript. Recipients must write a thank you note and meet with donor at a stewardship luncheon.
Robin M. Williams, Jr. Student Paper Competition
One or more awards will be made to the best empirical research paper on a topic of sociological interest by a UCI undergraduate sociology major. This award honors the late Professor Robin M. Williams Jr., who served as a Distinguished Visiting Professor in the Department of Sociology at UCI for more than 15 years. Papers should be no more than 35 pages and should represent original student work. Although papers co-authored with other students may be submitted for consideration. This award recognizes a student who has provided extraordinary service to the department, the School of Social Science, and/or the larger university community.
Sociology Outstanding Teaching Assistant Award
This award recognizes efforts and accomplishments in the classroom of a graduate student working as a teaching assistant.
Sociology Outstanding Graduate Research Assistant Award
This award recognizes the accomplishments of a graduate student who performs outstanding work as a Graduate Research Assistant for a faculty member.
Small Summer Research Awards
The Center for Asian Studies offers its graduate students an opportunity apply for small summer research awards.
William F. Podlich Fellowship
The William F. Podlich Fellowship on Democracy, established in 1999, offers support to incoming graduate students who participate in the Center's graduate training program on democracy. The fellowship is a gift from William F. Podlich, a nationally respected finance expert and one of the co-founders of Pacific Investment Management Company (PIMCO) in Newport Beach. The Podlich Fellowship translates his interest and involvement in American politics into direct support for students who will study the foundations of democracy in their research and graduate studeies. Podlich has provided support and guidance for the development of UC Irvine's Center for the Study of Democracy. Podlich also is a recipient of the UCI Medal and a member of the UCI Foundation.
Kugelman Citizen Peacebuilding Research Fellowships
The Center for Citizen Peacebuilding engages in research, education and action supporting citizen participation in public peace processes locally and globally. Since 1999 Center activities have aimed to prevent violent conflict and to promote reconciliation and sustainable peace in areas where violence occurs. Grants in the amount of $2000-3000 are being offered as seed money for project and grant development or for completing projects that are in the writing stage in preparation for publication. Proposals (no more than 3 pages) from both faculty and graduate students are welcome, but it is anticipated that most of the grant money will be allocated to graduate students. Faculty proposals that focus on some aspect of conflict resolution in the Middle East will be given preference. Focus on the Middle East is not necessary for graduate student proposals, but it is encouraged. The funding can be used in the summer and fall of 2012, for summer salary, course release, or research assistants. Travel with a specific justification for proposal-related research will be considered. The project must be relevant to the Center’s mission, and result in an academic publication (i.e., peer-reviewed journal article or book, conference proceedings, or a working paper). Grantees will be required to submit a written report to the Center at the end of the grant period, a copy of the manuscript, and present results at a research seminar.
CGPACS Graduate Student Small Grant Opportunity
The Center for Global Peace and Conflict Studies offers small grants for graduate students to further research projects, workshops, or focused working groups relevant to the Center's mission and interests. Proposals that concern the military/ strategic, economic/ environmental, or cultural/ normative motives, processes, and consequences of either peace or conflict are welcomed with the main criterion being that the proposed paper, project, or group address a problem that has transnational, international, or global implications.
Ethics Fellow Contest
UCI Interdisciplinary Center for the Scientific Study of Ethics and Morality, in conjunction with the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs, is offering a contest to become a UCI Ethics Fellow. Interested students should design a practical guide for the ethical UCI undergraduate, giving special attention to how students can develop tolerance of the diverse lifestyles and values they will find at the university.Proposals may be submitted by individual UCI students or by groups of students working as a unit. Proposals should be 5-10 pages, double-spaced, 12 point font. (Email attachments or hard copy proposals are acceptable. Research grants
The UC-CUBA Multi-Campus Research Program awards up to eight $1,000 dollar grants each year to University of California Ph.D. students conducting Cuba-related research, including travel. Applications will be considered for both initial research explorations and for developing/completing advanced projects. Interested applicants should submit a brief (2 page maximum) statement that outlines the project and explains how it fits into their course of study, accompanied by a budget, a short CV, and a letter of evaluating the project from the applicant's advisor. Individuals who received awards in the prior year are not eligible for the next cycle of awards.
IMBS Summer Research Support
IMBS graduate students as well as those students working with IMBS faculty and whose research involves mathematical topics in the behavioral sciences may apply for limited summer research support. To apply, the student must submit a brief (one-page) statement of the work proposed, and a letter of endorsement from his/her faculty advisor. The following fall, those who receive support will have an opportunity to present their research at a "mini-conference". Applications may be delivered in person to the IMBS office, SSPA 2123, or put in Janet Phelps' mailbox.
Global Connect Scholarship
Undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in Global Connect are eligible for these scholarships based on leadership skills and GPA.
Outstanding Legal Scholar Award
The Law Forum's Oustanding Legal Scholar Award is given annually to the Law Forum member who has best merged service to the Forum with academic excellence.
Research Paper Contest
This opportunity provides an environment and platform to showcase critical analysis and current research being conducted on the Middle East. M.E.S.S.I will be collecting policy papers written by undergraduate students for review by a panel of faculty regional experts. Policy papers already being written at UCI or previously written can count as long as they meet the requirements of the guidelines attached.
